A Cervelt wedding shawl keeps you warm through a winter ceremony without the bulk of a coat, so the outfit stays visible in every photograph. Cervelt is the fine winter down of farmed New Zealand red deer, gathered in small quantities, then spun and handwoven in Dhaka with historical Dhaka muslin tecniques.
What Cervelt is
Red deer grow a soft down under their coarse outer coat to get through winter. Cervelt is that down, separated from the outer hair and spun into yarn. Because each animal gives only a little, it is one of the scarcest fibres used in shawls.
Cervelt is not cashmere, which comes from goats, and it is not shahtoosh, which comes from the protected Tibetan antelope and is banned from trade. It is a legal fibre with its own soft, dry handle.

Who wears it
- The winter bride. Over a gown or lehenga for the walk between venues, the outdoor photographs and the evening reception.
- The groom. Folded over one shoulder of a sherwani or achkan, the way a groom’s shawl has long been worn at South Asian winter weddings.
- The mother of the bride. One piece that works with her outfit for every event of a December wedding.
- Guests flying to a winter wedding in Dhaka, Delhi, Lahore or Colombo, where December and January nights are cold and venues are often held in open-air.

Questions
Is Cervelt warm enough for an outdoor winter wedding?
It is warm for its weight and made for cold evenings. For snow or long waits outside, wear it over a lined outfit, or with a coat between photographs.
How does it feel against the skin?
Cervelt is a fine down fibre with a soft, dry handle. If you are sensitive to wool, ask us for a swatch before you choose.
Can I travel with it to the US, Canada or the Gulf?
Yes. Cervelt comes from farmed New Zealand red deer and is traded legally. Each piece travels with its certificate.
How do I care for it?
Store it folded in the cotton bag it arrives in, away from direct sunlight and damp. For cleaning, use a specialist cleaner who handles fine handwoven textiles.
Woven for Vivah by Muslin Dhaka.
