Dhaka Muslin Wedding Shawls

Dhaka Muslin Wedding Shawls for the Bride and the Nikkah

A Dhaka muslin wedding shawl is a handwoven cotton shawl, sheer enough to let the outfit underneath show and light enough to wear all day. Brides wear it over the head at the nikkah, over the shoulders at a haldi or gaye holud, and as a soft layer over a gown at a summer reception.

What Dhaka muslin is

Dhaka muslin is cotton. It is spun by hand into a very fine yarn and woven by hand in Dhaka, which is where its softness and slight translucence come from. It is not silk and it is not wool, so it breathes in heat and keeps you cool rather than warm.

Dhakai muslin has geographical indication status in Bangladesh, the same kind of protection that ties Champagne to France.

When to wear it

  • The nikkah. Draped over the head and shoulders, a muslin shawl gives cover without weight and photographs as a soft veil of light.
  • Haldi and gaye holud. Ivory or pale yellow muslin sits over a yellow or orange outfit without competing with it.
  • Summer and destination weddings. In heat or humidity, it is the one shawl you will not want to take off.
  • The walima or reception. Over a gown or lehenga, it softens bare shoulders for a formal evening.
  • The mother of the bride. A light piece she can wear through a long day indoors in any season.

For winter weddings outdoors, muslin will not keep you warm. Choose a Cervelt wedding shawl instead.

Colours and pairings

  • Natural ivory works with almost every bridal colour: deep red, maroon, gold, blush and white.
  • White muslin over a white gown gives a tonal, layered look for church and civil ceremonies.
  • A shawl with a woven border reads as a dupatta over a lehenga. A plain one reads as a wrap over a gown.

Questions

Is a muslin shawl warm enough for a winter wedding?

Not outdoors. It is cotton and made to be breatheable. For winter, choose Cervelt.

Is it see-through?

Yes, softly. That is the point at the nikkah and over a gown. Ask for a video of the piece over a dark outfit if you want to judge how sheer it is.

Can I wear it as a dupatta?

Yes. A muslin shawl with a border works as a nikkah or walima dupatta over a lehenga or sharara.

How do I care for it?

Store it folded in the cotton bag it arrives in, away from direct sunlight and damp. For cleaning, use a specialist cleaner who handles fine handwoven textiles.
