Mother of the Bride Shawls and Wraps: What to Wear, and What to Gift

The mother of the bride should wear a shawl that is warm enough for a long day, large enough to stay on, and in a colour taken from her own outfit, never white or ivory. For a winter wedding, pick cashmere or Cervelt; for summer, choose something light that breathes.

She is photographed from the first portrait in the morning to the last dance, so her shawl has more to do than any guest’s. Below are eight picks, then colours, the shawl-or-jacket question, the mother of the groom, and the shawl a couple can give her on the day. For every other wearer, see the best wedding shawls.

Our own pieces. The Cervelt wedding shawl and the Wedding Gift Edition on this list are made for Vivah by Muslin Dhaka and offered through the Vivah Atelier. We say so wherever they appear, and we do not score them.

The picks in detail

Each affiliate pick carries a Vivah rating out of 5. It weighs fibre, make, buyer reviews and how well the piece suits the mother of the bride, judged from the listing and its reviews rather than from wearing it. Buyer review figures were taken from Amazon and Etsy on 27 October 2026.

1. The Cervelt wedding shawl by Muslin Dhaka

The Cervelt wedding shawl by Muslin Dhaka

The piece she keeps · Vivah Atelier

  • Core materials: Cervelt, the fine winter down of farmed New Zealand red deer, separated from the coarse outer hair and spun into yarn.
  • Defining features: Woven by hand on a pit loom in Dhaka, in small, numbered editions. A certificate of authenticity and a QR code are issued in the owner’s name after purchase.
  • Main benefits: Warm for its weight, so it keeps off a winter chill throughout the day without adding bulk in photographs. A legal fibre to give, own and travel with, unlike shahtoosh.
  • Drawback: It is not bought in a click. You request to own it, then agree delivery and timing for the wedding with the atelier, so start well before the day.
  • Vivah rating: Not scored. This is our own piece.

What should the mother of the bride wear over her dress?

A shawl or wrap in a colour from her dress, large enough to stay on and warm enough for the colder season. In winter that means cashmere, Cervelt or a lined stole; in summer, silk, chiffon or a Dhaka muslin shawl with a woven colour design.

Size and closure matter more for her than for anyone else at the wedding. She will be on her feet for twelve hours or more, hugging guests, holding flowers and posing for photographs from every side. A narrow stole slides off by lunchtime. Choose a shawl wide enough to wrap round the back, around 70 in long or more, or one with a clasp, a bow or sleeves.

Colours: what to wear and what to avoid

Her dressShawl colours that suit it
NavySilver, soft gold, blush, navy one shade deeper
Silver or greySilver, charcoal, dusty blue, plum
Champagne or goldSoft gold, bronze, deep green, navy
Blush or roseRose gold, silver, dusty rose, grey
BlackSilver, gold, burgundy, black
Jewel tones (emerald, sapphire, plum)Gold, black, or the same colour one shade deeper

Three rules sit under the table:

  • No white, ivory or near-white champagne. Those belong to the bride, and the mother of the bride is in more photographs beside her than anyone. The exception is a shawl whose woven design carries colour across an off-white ground, such as a designed Dhaka muslin: it reads as a patterned shawl, not as bridal white.
  • Not the bridesmaids’ colour, unless the couple asks. It blurs her role in the photographs.
  • Coordinate with the mother of the groom, not match. Similar formality, complementary colours.

Shawl, jacket or sleeves?

A shawl suits formal and evening weddings and looks best over a gown in photographs. A tailored jacket is warmer for a daytime or outdoor wedding and looks clean in the receiving line. A wrap with sleeves sits between the two: covered arms for a church, nothing to hold, and it stays on through the dancing.

Many mothers of the bride wear a jacket or a heavier shawl for the ceremony and the photographs outside, then change to a lighter wrap for the reception.

By season

Winter. Choose 2-ply cashmere, Cervelt or a lined faux fur stole for photographs outside. A coat over the shawl between venues keeps both looking fresh. See cashmere wraps for weddings, faux fur shawls and stoles and, for the dress itself, winter mother of the bride dresses.

Spring and autumn. A woven pashmina or mid-weight cashmere is right for the cool ends of the day. See pashmina shawls for weddings.

Summer. Choose something that breathes: silk, chiffon or Dhaka muslin. A muslin shawl woven with a bespoke design in coloured yarn reads as a patterned shawl rather than bridal white, so it suits her as well as the bride. It covers the shoulders for a church and keeps the sun off at an outdoor ceremony without adding heat.

The mother of the groom

Everything on this page applies to her too. The two mothers should coordinate rather than match: similar formality, colours that sit well together in the family photographs, and neither in white, ivory or the bridesmaids’ colour. A quick message between them about colours before either buys saves both a second purchase. For guest rules in general, see shawls for wedding guests.

A shawl as a gift to the mother of the bride

In many families, in South Asia, the Gulf and beyond, the couple gives the mothers a fine shawl at the wedding. It is a thank-you she can wear on the day itself, and a piece she keeps.

What makes a shawl a good gift is what makes it worth keeping: a natural fibre, hand work and a story she can tell. If you do not know her outfit, Cervelt’s natural soft fawn sits beside almost any colour, and a Dhaka muslin piece whose woven design picks up the colours of the day works just as well; a scarf is easier still.

Our Wedding Gift Edition is made for this: a handwoven Dhaka muslin piece with a bespoke woven design, or Cervelt in its natural fawn, boxed with its numbered certificate and a handwritten card, sent straight to her if you like. To choose together, book a private consultation. For every other kind of gift, see gifts for the mother of the bride.

How to wear a shawl all day

  • Over both arms, crossed at the back: Drape it across the back and over the crook of each arm, then cross one end over the opposite shoulder. Holds through greetings and photographs.
  • Pinned at the shoulder: Wrap it round the shoulders and fix the ends with a small brooch or shawl pin at one shoulder. Hands-free for the whole reception.

Practise both at home in the dress, sitting and standing, before the day.

Questions

What should the mother of the bride wear over her dress?

A shawl or wrap in a colour from her dress, large enough to stay on through a long day. In winter, choose cashmere, Cervelt or a lined faux fur stole; in summer, silk, chiffon or a Dhaka muslin shawl with a woven colour design. A wrap with a clasp, a bow or sleeves saves holding it all day.

What colour shawl should the mother of the bride wear?

A tone taken from her dress, the same colour one shade deeper, or a soft metallic such as silver or gold. Silver suits navy, grey and blue; soft gold suits champagne, green and jewel tones. Never white or ivory, which belong to the bride.

What colours should the mother of the bride not wear?

White, ivory and near-white champagne, which belong to the bride, and usually the bridesmaids’ colour, which blurs her role in the photographs. Black is fine at most formal and evening wedding events unless the couple asks otherwise. When in doubt, ask the couple.

Should the mother of the bride wear a shawl or a jacket?

A shawl for formal and evening weddings, where it looks best over a gown. A tailored jacket for daytime and outdoor weddings, where it is warmer and neater. A wrap with sleeves sits between the two and stays on without being held through the dancing.

Should the mother of the bride and the mother of the groom match?

They should coordinate, not match. Aim for similar formality and colours that sit well together in family photographs, and avoid white, ivory and the bridesmaids’ colour. A short message between them about colours before either buys is the simplest way to get it right.

Can the mother of the bride wear black?

Yes, at most formal and evening weddings, unless the couple asks otherwise or family tradition discourages it. A silver, gold or burgundy shawl lifts black and keeps it festive in photographs. At a daytime summer wedding, a lighter colour usually looks better.

What is a good wedding gift for the mother of the bride?

Something she will keep and use. A fine handwoven shawl is a long tradition in many families, and she can wear it on the day itself. Jewellery and framed photographs from the day are other lasting choices. Choose a natural fibre and a neutral colour if you do not know her outfit.

What shawl keeps the mother of the bride warm at a winter wedding?

A 2-ply cashmere or Cervelt shawl keeps her warm through a long day without bulk. For photographs outside, a lined faux fur stole looks warmest. Over a coat between venues, any of these will see her through a December wedding.

The short answer

Choose her shawl for warmth and size first, then a colour from her dress, and leave white to the bride. The picks above cover every season and dress code. For the one she keeps, request to own the Cervelt wedding shawl. For the couple’s thank-you, the Wedding Gift Edition arrives boxed and ready to give.
